Yes, Fiji Really Is Paradise

What comes to mind when you think of Fiji? Tropical splendor? Uninhabited islands? Miles of coral reef and blue ocean? All of this is true, plus a whole lot more. The real takeaway, however, is the hospitality of the Fijians and their genuine friendliness. Everywhere you go you are greeted with an enthusiastic “bula bula!” It’s implied meaning is multi-layered, but it literally means “life.” Hence, the greeting is a way of wishing someone more health and good life. It’s also just a great big friendly hug and a gentle reminder that we are all connected by basic principles such as the pursuit of happiness and good tidings.

Okay, back to the magical superlatives which are Fiji. The country is worth a destination of its own, but it’s also a perfect stop-over on your way to/from Australia or New Zealand. Fiji is comprised of 333 unique islands across the South Pacific, many of which are uninhabited. The largest island of Viti Levu is the operating center of the tourism industry and the location of Nadi International airport. The first thing that hits you upon arrival is the tropical heat and humidity. I chose to travel by private transfer to a resort 16 miles away on the island of Malolo, where I booked a week in an over-water bure. Adventures encountered over that week included a boat trip to “Castaway Island” (where the movie of the same name was filmed), a spectacular snorkel at a pristine coral reef in the middle of nowhere, daily kayak and stand-up paddle board excursions around the island, occasional relaxing spa treatments (not that I needed to relax more), and challenging hikes up the various island peaks. Fiji was a perfect blend of hedonism and physical exercise; culminating in a perfect getaway to a charming island nation.
