Are Travel Agents Still A Thing?
"Are travel agents still a thing?"
Yes, but most vastly differ from the old-school connotation, and many prefer Travel Designer or Travel Advisor, depending on whether or not they book custom travel. Here are my two cents about the difference between the old and the new, plus what it’s like working with the Adventure More team.
Though I cringe a little when asked this question, I actually love it, as it allows me to inform travelers of what Travel Designers do and the amazing benefits we can provide.
In my opinion, Travel Agents were very transactional back in the day. Travel Agents would book you a ticket, cruise, and/or resort, and then the transaction would be over. Whereas I'm incredibly relationship-oriented and pride myself in getting to know my clients. It’s important for me to know your likes/dislikes, hobbies, interests, family, pets, etc. This knowledge allows me to better understand you and craft one-of-a-kind itineraries based on what you desire! Travel Design is more than just booking something. It’s connecting you with people, places, and activities around the globe that you may not be able to find on your own. Additionally, I will be with you every step of the way, from the moment you contact me, during the itinerary design, throughout your travels, after you get home, and sometimes even longer because, honestly, one adventure is never enough!
For me, this isn't a part-time gig that will allow me to travel more. Personally, I absolutely love planning adventures for people. I love working with and helping people explore our world. Yes, being in the industry allows me to travel from time to time. However, this personal travel is necessary in order to stay abreast of what's new and happening in the world, so I can keep you all informed. But I'll be honest, it's also a nice perk. :)
So, while the answer is technically yes, Travel Designers are worth so much more than many realize. We listen when you describe what you're looking for, and then we investigate, collaborate, plan, and do everything we can to make that vision come alive. We celebrate your wins and work tirelessly to solve the misses. We VIP you at hotels and get you extra amenities and perks when we can. We connect you to incredible people, activities, and experiences you otherwise would never have heard of. We've got your back when faced with a weather delay. And we incorporate special surprises when we can. Basically, we're with you, though not actually with you, every step of your amazing adventure!
